Karaka News and Oral Language

This term Karaka has a HUGE focus on oral language and exploring the world beyond our school gates.
Each week the children from one House become our Karaka Class Reporters.
Their brief is to research and present one one of the following:
1/ An interesting current event - at our school, in our community, in New Zealand or somewhere in the World.

2/ An interesting science related topic, e.g. finding out about a type of insect or animal, space travel, wild weather, etc.

Today our first two children reported their news with fantastic success.

Cuban had found an amazing article about a proposed new hydro slide.
He knew it cost a lot of money, almost $2 millions dollars and that it was longer than a rugby field and you could go almost 30km per hour on it.

Here is Cuban being a brave reporter:

Briar had seen white tigers on her trip to New Plymouth and found out that many of them can't see, hear or taste. She made a very convincing argument that we should not breed white tigers - healthy tigers are orange and black and can see, hear and taste and live happy lives.
She presented hers in a movie clip, pictures and reporting.

Here is Briar's report:
